Truth moment: at one point in my hair journey, I would search for products that would ‘fix’ and ‘mend’ my split ends. These products would claim that they would keep split ends at bay and would literally fix them. At the time, I did not know how to read ingredient labels and didn’t know what my hair liked.
All I cared about was fixing my split ends so my hair would retain length. Well, I’m hear to tell you that knowing how to read ingredient labels and knowing your hair (texture, density, porosity, moisture/protein balance) is very important when choosing your hair products.
Personally, my hair is fine with low density and silicones do not work for my hair. Most of the products I tried to ‘fix’ and ‘mend’ my split ends were full of silicones, which weighed my down and caused unnecessary tangles. Needless to say, I cut inches of hair instead of learning that all I needed was to trim the split ends. Yes, everything that glitters isn’t gold.
The perfect curl doesn’t come in a bottle. You cannot purchase a ‘twist out’ or a ‘perm rod set’ directly in a container for $17.99. It’s all about your technique and the set regimen you have for your own hair to create the styles for you.
As long as you have a cleanser/cowash*, moisturizer, oil, styler, and satin scarf/pillow case you are on your way to saving lots of money and creating simple, beautiful styles!
Additionally we have to remember that everyone has different growth rates, curl types, and different products that work for them. When you are gazing at the fabulous naturals and curlies on Instagram and Youtube that you take into account that the things that they do work for them.
Be inspired, but no need to watch the video over and over again to write down exactly what they did for their hair. I suggest you keep a notebook on styles you would like to try, products that worked and didn’t work for your hair, and regimens used to see what really works for your own hair.
Don’t be ashamed to have many hair products in your arsenal. However, make sure you read the label to know exactly how to use them (don’t guess) and read the ingredients to make sure that they will work with your hair.
Here’s a secret…the real regimen is all in your fingers with lots of patience, effort, time, and love. The sooner you accept this simple equation to achieve healthy hair, the more you will realize that the perfect curl doesn’t come in a bottle.
