Because black folks have coarse hair maybe
BlackHairInformation.com says
Coarse hair means how thick the strand is, not all ‘black folks’ have coarse hair
Ramayada Devine says
That doesn’t make it safe to use as well as bleaching a kids hair.. I know.. I never used it on my daughters hair and she has real nigga hair lbvs..
Dante' Nicole Miller says
What’s wrong with have course hair? A child should learn how to do their hair young.
Theresa Loscocco says
Even if one does have ” coarse” hair, you can still learn to embrace your natural curls and manage them without using harsh chemicals. There plenty of evidence out there to prove this, all you gotta do is reach for it.
Tk Tatum Richey says
Gtfoh with this EMBRACE and learn how yo do your hair early shit we as humans and parents are entitled to do whatever we want with our hair shit some ppl do more damage trying to go natural than relaxing their hair idk why some natural ppl feel like they are queen Aphrodite because they are natural when its really hate pure and simple ive been natural my whole life but since I have silky/str8 hair Boone is high giving me about it so please stop hair is hair is still freaking hair no matter how you wear it
Suzy says
No one is bashing straight hair. The fact is perms are chemicals, dangerous ones at that. Perms are sodium hydroxide, if you leave a perm on something long enough, it will corrode, disintegrate, disappear before your eyes. Why would you put something like that in your hair? Perms have even been said to cause fibroids. For grown people who want to put it in their hair, that’s fine that’s your choice, just like it’s your choice to eat unhealthy and smoke. But to put it in a child’s hair, that is completely ignorant. My mother started perming my hair when I was 5 cause I was “tender-headed” and for a while I was ok. In fifth grade you could start to see signs of hair oxidation and my scalp was extremely sensitive to the point where I could barely tolerate a perm for 5 minutes. No one hates straight hair, people hate CORROSIVE CHEMICALS. Parents make choices about their children health, when you choose to douse your kid’s hair in dangerous chemicals what makes that better than giving them a cigarette?
As for my self I would hate to think that I was a bad enough parent that I couldn’t learn to manage my kid’s hair without hurting them.
Nik Joy says
Nothing is wrong with coarse. Thats the point

Manageability over Color.
Theresa Loscocco says
Manageability can be obtained in becoming educated in how to care for your own hair texture. Unfortunately many black girls are given hair relaxers at such a young age and are indoctrinated to continue the practice all their lives and as a result never learn how to care for their own hair in its natural state. I can’t tell you how many older black women have pulled me aside to ask me how I care for my hair in an attempt to learn to care for their own natural curls. I find this very sad, to go through your life as a woman not even knowing how to care of yourself without religiously dumping harsh chemicals on your hair every couple weeks. If you put even a dime sized amount of relaxer on a chicken breast, it will erode it in less than 4 hours. Relaxers are very unhealthy and children cannot give their consent to endure this treatment and are subjected to it before they can learn what it is they are putting in their bodies. Relaxers can cause irreversible damage to ones hair and scalp and it’s not fair that so many little girls are subjected to this damage simply because their care takers don’t have the patience to care or enlighten themselves on the care of natural hair. In this way these little girls can only learn to dislike their natural texture and feel ashamed of the ” burden” that it creates for their care takers.
Rocío Montañez Ramón says
it shouldnt be ok

Kyra Walden Brown says
because what is the need to lighting a childs hair ?
Sheenana Sheena says
I think it goes way back from generations we allow this to happen because we grow up thinking that relax hair is the best hair to have. That why me as a mother said if I was to ever get a daughter I will teach her that nothing is more beautiful than your natural hair, rather it’s think, thin or coarse. We have to encourage our childeren to love them selves the way God made us.
Lou Lou Anchondo says
or possibly…learn to manage course hair without the chemicals. it’s not ok to teach a child their hair isn’t the right texture…or the right color.
Ni-Ni Patterson says
Reaching much? Especially to appeal to certain people when the first one isn’t even real to actually compare the second one to. And there are children walking around with dyed hair of several nationalities, so whatever point you attempted to prove failed.
Ni-Ni Patterson says
I keep forgetting y’all are focused on further division amongst us. Ignore my post.
Do carry on.
Yvette Harris says
You don’t have to buy
Tonya Harris Slaymon says
If people want to use relaxers, SO WHAT? ?
Dante' Nicole Miller says
Why should a child have their hair relaxed. 9 out 10 that isn’t the child’s choice. White woman don’t force a child to dye their hair why should we tell our children their hair is bad so we should relax it. We shouldn’t make our mothers mistakes
Antinea Nicole Ellis Johnson says
We’re not telling them their hair is bad. It’s just making their hair more manageable.
It’s all about what type of hair you’re used to caring for.
Kristina Cook says
Smh but UR teaching them self hate. Relaxer was made for the real Hebrews to look and feel White
Makia MiMi Meadows says
Neither of it is okay! This why I’m choosing to go natural now, I don’t even know what my natural hair looks like. The manipulation has got to stop so early!
Nicole Pan's says
Nice I buy for my my son
Ramayada Devine says
I used that exact perm as a child and my hair is just coming back to life since my last relaxer in 2012.. My daughter has real nigga hair but I managed it with all my strength and she loves her natural hair.. She will be sixteen and never once got a perm.. You live and you learn. My mom begged me not to put a perm in my head but I didn’t listen and I regret it. But I’m almost natural and loving it. #goodforme #Godismystylist if he wanted me with straight hair he would’ve made me that way.

Tish Taylor says
Some people do lighten their childrens hair its just not advertised. Ive seen it!!!!
Shazzel Thompson says
My mom used to relax my hair as a child, I am in my 30s. So these child relaxers are not new on the market. They’ve been around forever. In my opinion, I don’t see anything wrong in using a relaxer as long as it’s done properly to help with managing tight curls and the integrity of the hair. Ive seen ppl improperly brush a child’s natural hair and cause more damage than good!! Also parents should keep in mind that once children hit puberty hormones can change their hair texture as well, so it may or may not be needed. Now color and lightening on the other hand is not necessary. Just sharing my opinion. 🙂
Shanice Sahel says
How about we instil some integrity in to our little girls self esteem by not using the relaxer that’s necessary these boxes aren’t IMO given the history of the relaxer too
Shanice Sahel says
It’s not a conditioner now is it?
Shazzel Thompson says
Totally agree, but my comment was more towards having something to help with manageability, not self image. I believe regardless of what is out in the market, it’s the parents overall job to instill self image to a child.
Theresa Loscocco says
Manageability does not need to be obtained using a relaxer, how about education in learning how to care for your natural hair texture?
AChantel Cheatwood says
Because people can do whatever they want because its their own hair. Don’t know why everybody is always worried about everybody else. People should mind their business more.
Dee Dee Priscilla Martin says
Bad
Nicole Hartley says
I dnt use a relaxer because my hair doesnt need it but whyyyyyyy do people that are “natural” think they are all high and mighty and look down on people that choose to use chemicals. My sister uses relaxers and her hair is soft, strong and healthy. Its all about how u take care of your hair regardless if u use chemical or not. Its nobody’s place to shun somebody for using relaxers. Mind your buisness and do what works for u
Theresa Loscocco says
There’s no shunning going on here. I think that the issue is that many women turn to relaxers because they simply don’t KNOW how to care for their natural textures. I think it’s best to be informed about natural hair care alternatives before turning to a relaxer just because one doesn’t know how to take care of their own hair in its natural God given state.
Tk Tatum Richey says
Gtfoh its shunning to the max no way around it
Maimuna Munira says
Anything negative it’s geared toward the black race and unfortunately we they she he fall for it…..love the hair u or ur child is in its beautiful ….. Unfortunately we have to learn this many times on our own
Devion Truthserum says
In my humble opinion I would venture to say it is because society would like to impart to our youth that the Loreal depiction isn’t necessary since that little one is already in the lane of “perfection”, whereas the little one on the Just For Me box ‘isn’t quite there yet’ and therefore she needs a little assistance. *smirking* as if….
Karma Amanfi says
No need to relax a child’s head…so called mothers above….I think learning to deal with your childs natural hair until THEY are grown enough to handle that process or want to. Wtf should a 5 year old or a 8 year old have relaxed hair? Who is at school to impress? A date? Gtfoh.
Ocasio Brittany says
kiddie perms work great on grown woman edgesbut i dont see whats wrong with neither if the momma wanna perm the kid hair or bleach it thats her choice
Dolores Rojas-Prograis says
Whatever a parents choose for their child is between them, and that child….noones business unless they are causing that child distress or abuse if so than report it to child protective services…it really amazes me how ppl want to always impose what they think is right or wrong for others….mind your business and worry about you and yours …they are all still beautiful children anyways and loving yourself doesn’t have to rely on hair…
Shanice Sahel says
Where are the natural hair nazis when you need them too many straight mind over here man smh
Shanice Sahel says
It’s not ok at all
Angela Gaines says
Both are very harsh chemicals for children hair
Monique Wilson says
Your not even supposed to use relaxers while pregnant so why put it in your kids head…. I mean to each is own….
Jo Brace says
Nuff said? Like white people are going around putting relaxer on childrens heads? No chemical is good for children at all. But it’s down to the mothers and their choices for their children.
I have to say that I follow this page as a white mother of a bi-racial child. I take care of my daughters hair. I came here for tips and used to love to read the hair stories. Posts like this make me angry. There is enough division without coming across this junk. I don’t think most white people have an opinion on whether black hair is relaxed or not. I can say that isn’t the case here in London. I love my daughters natural curly hair and wouldn’t change it, nor let anyone pass opinion or judgement on it.
People are relaxing their childrens hair are doing it because that is what works for them. Don’t turn hair relaxing into a Black vs. White scenario. It’s poor taste.
Seletha TheLady McCray says
Natural isnt for everybody. Everybody has different style or different taste. If ppl wanna wear their hair naturial let them, if they wanna relax it let them its their choice not anyone else. Dont shoot down the next person because they wanna put a relaxer i their hair thats their business
Camella Rose Jones says
Who cares not my child
Latika Worthon says
Because the peeze ass head kids need to get some chemicals in they carpet ass heads
Kelly White says
They going to far now!! Damn Shame. Both are equally bad
Tameka Daut says
Your skin is an organ. Anything you put on it will reach your internal organs. That is why there are topical medications to treat internal problems. So why put lye ( a harsh alkali abrasive chemical) also a carcinogen on a child’s head. An adult can do what they want. To each is it’s own, but you wouldn’t feed your child bleach so why put lye on their hair.
Theresa Loscocco says
Exactly!
Celina Millian says
So true
C.a. Combs says
Cause you don’t have to have a nappy head lil girl. Be crying cause it hurts to comb their hair. But I don’t think hair color really does anything. It’s just for looks.
Theresa Loscocco says
Combing your child’s natural hair does NOT have to be such a painful experience or cause breakage if the parent learns how to moisturize, prep and manage the hair properly. I think putting harsh chemicals on your hair and scalp that can burn, dry out, cause irreversible hair damage ect is WAY more traumatizing than a little ” tender- headedness.
Bree Lewis says
Wow, a lot of self hatred in these comments. What’s the need in perming a child’s head? Thus inadvertently telling them something is wrong with their hair? I’m thankful I didn’t grow up conditioned to loathe my hair. Ni-Ni Patterson that’s the point as absurd as it is seeing the box on the left, is the way you should feel about the chemicals on the right. How is making you aware of what you’re teaching your child division? Understanding and comprehension are key. This post is doing nothing but making black women aware that self hatred trickles down to your children. You are taught to hate your hair and slapping a perm in it vs taking the time to educate yourself on the texture of your hair so your daughter will know how to not only style it but appreciate it’s versatility.
Bree Lewis says
Dolores Rojas-Prograis it’s always amazing how simple people view things that are as deep as the abyss. Black women were taught to hate their hair, through perming it became socially acceptable. You may think it’s judgement, but it’s something as a parent you should think long and hard about. Maybe you being offended is a good thing because it allows you to think. The truth hurts, you can’t be afraid of it.
Nicole Hartley says
U never see white woman shunning each other and arguing so deeply about keeping their hair in its natural state when some get perms to make it curly or dye it… but black woman will look down on each other and argue about skin color, natural hair and everything under the sun
titi says
Your very ignorant. The reason why they don’t argue because they weren’t mental screwed but uplifted, read your history.
Monique Earle says
There are only certain ways to style “natural” hair. Not everyone like that look. I for one will relax my hair forever. It’s my hair and my choice. This “natural” bandwagon everyone wants to jump on is to ridiculous. Funny how most “natural” people braid up their hair and slap on a weave/wig.
Grace Yancy says
Amen! These mothers start too early putting perms on these little girls. Give there hair a chance to grow.
Janie Dee says
I think we should stop judging one another natural is ok and if they want to wear it straight is OK and wigs and a weave is OK this is America we have choices when it come to hair
ant to do with their hair
Jovie F. says
Now that I’m an adult with a daughter and know the consequences of relaxers, I would never relax our hair. I stop relaxing a few years ago and we both have beautiful long curls, they take much more time to manage BUT I’m not damaging our scalps. Nothing wrong with loving the natural you. Whatever floats your boat.
Theresa Loscocco says
I don’t think anyone here is harping on the choices people make: natural vs permed hair. Whatever you choose to do, it’s always best to be fully informed of your practice, especially if your routine involves regular use of corrosive chemicals being used on your body. It’s true what you say about so many other issues in this world that need our attention but how can we focus and divert our attention to those issues if we can’t even learn to care for ourselves holistically first? I feel like these children need someone to advocate on their behalf because they don’t have the consent or understanding to object to using relaxers. Taking care of others and/ or other issues first begins in knowing how take care of oneself first. Let’s start at home with ourselves and the people/family that mean the most to us first. Now that’s prioritization that makes sense.
Shakara N. Klunder says
If an adult can make the choice to perm their hair…then that same adult can can make the choice on THEIR child’s head!!!! Damn not everyone agrees or does the same shit…..we’re human we’re. Supposed to b different no everyone is the same!!!
Shakara N. Klunder says
Perms make hair more manageable…..black and whites use them so what’s the difference
Eve-barbara Calixte says
yeah something is wrong with this pic, but too bad as a child you don’t really have a say when ur mother decides to use chemical on ur hair.If i could have any other way i rather keep my natural born beautiful lock.
Shavell Artiste says
There is no difference. The are both wrong.
Joeneyce Cunningham says
It’s ridiculous because people are noticing that the world is becoming more welcoming than before? That’s it’s not as hard as it appeared? Monique Earle I really wish that by December 31st of this year, AT LEAST adults will stop confusing to and too. #OffSubjectButNecessary You’re following a hair page but clearly ignore the importance of TRANSITIONING by way of PROTECTIVE STYLING. Who wants to do their hair every day? LOL! So females that get relaxers don’t wear weave/braids? #JesusHelpMe #IllStopWhileImAhead
JM Walker says
Putting each other down. Making negative assumptions about people. Like “You must not care about your child’s self esteem”. Its okay to warn people of the negative side effects and that there is nothing wrong with natural hair that’s fine. But all that other crap. Come on really.
Carmella McCoy says
This done stepped on a lotttttttta toes. This is why BW have the highest rate of fibroids – the lye you put on they head can corrode aluminum!!!
Lianaa Lee says
Both are wrong. Perms are bad, wanna know why ? They give you a burning sensation WITH the reasonable amount of time for it to keep on, its harsh chemicals that permanently change your hairs texture and it does leave scaring at times. You cause irreversible damage with perms and it’s sad that many young girls are forced to get them instead of wearing their natural hair , that’s why a lot of them have little to no hair especially because of back-to-back braiding. & no you can do more with natural hair than relaxed. You have only straight hair with relaxers, natural hair you can have straight, and curly or kinky without the need of rollers, curling wands etc.
Tafara Tapfumanei says
what a stupid comment to make whats wrong with having coarse hair, its your bloody hair regardless of the texture.
Taffie Tapfumanei says
Black people always focused on the wrong things instead of worrying about serious issues that plague our communities like gun crime and unemployment, we have debates over perming hair vs natural hair smh
Jerrica M Dunn says
Just because there’s not a child on the hair color box doesn’t mean they don’t do it. I’ve seen plenty little girls with their hair colored and lightened as well as getting it permed and relaxed. I say as long as it’s done professionally there should be no harm done.
Melody Elizabeth Duran says
Thank you! If people studied cosmetology more, they’d see how bad both of this is . ):
Shannon Jefferson says
Black folks hair is course..not white folks hair..duh??? Thats why its not ok.advertisement
Vedejah Scroggins says
I don’t like either on a little girl I had a perm and I would hate for my head to burn still do so I quit doing it both of these will destroy hair if it’s not taken care of keep little girls hair natural until they are old enough to take care of it themselves and make that decision on their own I don’t think I would have ever after the first time said I want a perm again but my momma wanted me to have it so I kept it
Katherine Scott says
I would not dye or relax my child’s hair. When they’re older that’s up to them but ill keep my kids how God gave them to me
Wenn Dori says
It’s not going natural but returning natural…no black was born with a perm…if you want to make your mane straight then blow it out…other wise stay real…stay kinky curly wavy and nappy…ditch the chemical 🙂
Atalia Gillispie says
It may be wrong but its also apart of culture some people dont have long wavy hair we hve to meet in the middle
Tiki Knauls says
I do agree!!!! good point
Beckie Bec says
I completely agree!!!!
Sweetkisses Bergan says
Only black feel it the most….poor black people
Kay McLean says
Hmm I don’t agree with the colouring of a child’s hair. However, not everyone is able to deal with the super thick hair. I remember my neighbour used to relax her little girls hair. They were jewish, little girl had these tight kinky spirals, mother didn’t know what to do. My grandma relaxed my hair when I was 10 so that I cld start to do my own hair. Leave people alone. Not everyone is 3C and not all of us know how to work with or like the 4’s
Nikki Campbell says
Super memories! Just for me! Lol!
Kristina Cook says
What do u mean natural hair is not for everybody, do u hear UR self. That’s who u are if u ppl knew UR real history befor slavery and who u are you would never touch anything that did away with UR natural look. You would be to proud to do so and to ashamed to do it.
