The days of the ethnic woman entrepreneur are here, and we couldn’t be happier! Before the rise of the natural hair movement, many shop owners and brands targeted towards African American women were owned by people of other nationalities.
And while we live in a free world where everyone is entitled to chase the American Dream, we haven’t really seen many business owners that look (and think) like us.
Thankfully, things change! Social media has made it possible for anyone to start their own business. For the natural hair world, this means that all of the women who make awesome products from scratch in their kitchen get an opportunity to showcase their creations.
Below are five women that own natural/organic indie hair care brands, and we think they’re ultimate examples of girl power. You will get a chance to know them, their stories, and their brands! Comment below if you’ve heard or used any of these brands before.
Giovan Lane, CinagrOrganic
Did you know that CinagrO is ‘Organic’ backwards? Branding this simple yet ingenious palindrome is one of the many things we love about Giovan – the owner of Philadelphia based company CinagrOrganic.
Giovan founded her company after seeing the amazing results she received from creating her own hair products. Her products, which include a Coconut Oil* Masque, Scalp & Hair Growth Vitalizer, and best selling lightweight styler named Vitamoist, helped grow her shoulder length relaxed hair to almost waist length in a matter of years.
Her dedication to healthy lifestyle in addition to healthy hair is another reason why she’s growing in popularity on social media and beyond.
Candace, Grown by God
Are you a Christian curly girl? Looking for a brand that has the same ideals as you, as well as great products? You’d love Candace from Grown by God.
Mother and brand owner, this Cleveland based business owner is like the girlfriend you never had. Targeted towards both women AND men, Grown by God proudly claims Layzie Bone from Bone-Thugs n-Harmony as one of their clients. They have a range of products from shampoo to gel that are chemical free and provide major benefits to all hair types.
Scarlett, Wondercurl
Are you trying to find the perfect range of stylers for your curly tresses? Then we’d recommend checking out Wondercurl, owned and operated by Scarlett Rocourt.
A kindred spirit and a vegan, Scarlett is a wonderful person to be around. In addition to being a pinnacle of hair journey goals on blogs and social network sites like Pinterest, her brand carries eight hair care products (including their signature Get Set Hair Jelly), hair smoothies, a cleanser, and a deep treatment. If you’re looking for a brand that will give you soft and defined curls, no matter what your hair type, Wondercurl is for you.
Katrina Josey, KJ Naturals at etsy. I feelike her products were for me! My hair has been doing great since I started using her products almost exclusively. Some items may seem pricey but they are all-natural and not watered down, you don’t need to use a lot so they last a really long time
