Rihanna’s Doobie Wrap – Yay or Nay?

Rihanna American Music Awards Doobie Wrap Hairstyle

I love a silly celebrity story. And today being Thanksgiving eve with way too much on your mind to learn about actual hair care, it’s the perfect time for one of these ‘nothing stories’. The person in question this time is none other than Rihanna at the American Music Awards.

‘They’ as in the media as well as concerned naysayers on Twitter are saying that Rihanna’s doobie wrap hair style was not a real hair style? Necole Bitchie posted a twitter caption on Instagram that said:

Rihanna walked out of the Dominican hair salon straight to the AMA’s.

I don’t know about you but I like Rihanna’s diamond bobbie pin doobie wrap, To be honest, at first I was a little disturbed because I couldn’t let go of the fact that you cannot wear that style outside, but then I said to myself, who says you can’t? And where in the world did I get that from?

The Huffington Post began their fun rant by saying:

Welp, leave it to Rihanna to rock the most talked about look at the 2013 American Music Awards last night. And we’re not referring to her barely there Jean Paul Gaultier ensemble — it was her hair that stole the show. The superstar truly, actually and factually wore a doobie wrap! (Insert dropped jaws)

That was hilarious, because the last time I checked Jean Paul Gaultier is an awesome designer and normally the focus at award shows is typically ‘what she wore’ not ‘how she wore her hair’.

This time however, the hair fashion police were out in full force and the doobie wrap was the center of the disturbance. Don’t worry though, this post is really not about tearing down the historical doobie wrap, after all many of us lived by that style to help keep our straight hair looking flawless.

It really is about exploring the reason someone else’s personal style becomes the center of attention in a negative way and trying to decipher where it all started. How did the doobie wrap all of a sudden become the most shameful thing a woman could do on a public stage, while receiving a prestigious award?

As a woman that consistently pushes the envelope with everything from twerking on Instagram before a show to countless tattoos Rihanna knew the buzz a hairstyle like that would create when she stepped onto the red carpet.

She knew that there would be some naysayers particularly in the Hispanic and black community that might give her the side eye. In the spirit of good fun, we thought about RiRi’s little stunt and wondered what made her hair such a big deal? What is it that wearing what looks to be a completely neat and conservative look that has our panties in such a bunch?

One thing we do in our community that’s a little ‘eh’ is giving negative power to simple things, something as tiny as wrapping your hair in a circle and adding a few pins is defined as not good enough to be worn in public, closely akin to another style that is not appropriate for work, or not appropriate for school.

Somehow these imaginary lines are drawn and we dare not cross them even when the truth is, you have the power to wear your hair the way you see fit. Personal style is about doing what makes you comfortable, it is not defined by anyone or anything, it is not defined by a period of time or how the media thinks you should be, it is personal. Let the fireworks begin *wink*

The Huffington post continues its commentary by saying

Basically, it’s equivalent to walking out the of house with your rollers still in. With that said, you can only imagine the shock and awe that swept across Twitter when RiRi was spotted rocking the look at one of the biggest events of the year, where she received the AMA’s first-ever Icon Award. Thankfully she upgraded the look for her performance of “Diamonds” by adding some pearl and rhinestone encrusted bobby pins to the mix. But it was still a doobie.

What is even more hilarious is thanksgiving is around the corner (at the time), and there are a ton of things we could be focused on but all week long we will be talking about a doobie wrap. Tsk tsk.

What say you, would you wear a doobie wrap in public, and if so why not?

No it’s so ghetto looking. It’s meant for at home. Rihanna’s stylist is dead wrong for letting her come out like that too. Cute outfit though rihanna. Lol.

It’s her hair, she can do whatever she wants … because when it’s my hair I do whatever I want and anyone that doesn’t like it knows where to go.

Jessica KupKake Brittingham

I feel she was making a statement personally

Kelsey Chatman
Kelsey Chatman

Yes, she was definitely making a statement. Those who are still walking around judging her still don’t get it. It’s because of them that she wants to defy societal beauty standards. It angers them and she loves it because she knows she beautiful no matter what.

Catina Hadley

Tanina Woodard RN Bsn

She is a celebrity and they do things to make ppl talk and look it wrks. I dnt think the hairstyle was ever suppose to be combed out. Supposedly she stole it from another rapper(who is irrelevant) who says this hairstyle represents a crown as she is a queen. :-/

Karlene Weatherington

Nay Nay Nay

Kamilah Evans

I’m sorry. Rihanna is a great entertainer no doubt about that….but the girl is just bored now. Her attitude has changed drastically and she’s become so conceited and arrogant.

It’s a flat beehive from back in the day. I do remember a few years back, maybe more than a few because I was in middle school probably, when wearing your hair in the wrap was a style.

Brenda Sanders

Ppl are petty about something so small- wraps have been worn long ago as a- short simple doo!
