Reader Question:
First I’d like to say how much I love your site! I am 17 and I have hair that’s to my bra strap. It’s pretty long, but I take it as luck because I have not been caring for it as well as I should and I don’t want it to start breaking! As of now I wash it every other week and I try to stretch the relaxer to 10 weeks. Is there any protein conditioner you would suggest? And as for oils*, I have this carrot oil one that smells awful! Is olive oil* just as good? Also, do I HAVE to wrap it every night? Do you think motions hair products are good and healthy? Thank you!!
Our Answer:
I’m glad that you are enjoying the articles on the site. I find it counter-productive to suggest particular products as they may not be available in your area or your hair may not respond to them quite so well. However for the sake of argument here are a few protein conditioners that have worked quite well for my hair in the past:
- Motions Protein Reconstructor
- L’Oreal Elvive Damage Care Repairing Conditioner
- Tresemme Anti Breakage Conditioner
- A large egg cracked into my usual moisturizing conditioner*!
Olive oil* is every bit as good as carrot oil so go ahead and use it if your wish, the purpose of oil is to seal moisture into your hair so most oils* will be suitable. In my opinion, coconut oil is hands down the best oil there is!
You absolutely don’t have to wrap your hair nightly, I have found that wrapping in the ‘traditional’ sense around your head is way more manipulation that necessary. You may just want to tie your hair in a very loose ponytail and tuck your hair into a bonnet, it works just as well without any of the hassle. Another option is to loosely bantu knot your hair and wear a bonnet for the night. You end up with luscious loose waves the following day. As with most brands, Motions have some products that are good but some don’t work that well for me. Everyone’s hair is different so your results may vary. Just take a peek at ingredients before you purchase!
Good luck in your hair care journey.
