You have to admit that there is so much to learn about our hair that by the time we get to porosity we are slightly overwhelmed and just over it. The thing is porosity might be the most important thing you can learn about the health of your hair because it determines how your hair holds moisture, the strength of your strand and how to use products in a way that works for you.
Porosity simply is how well you hair is able to hold moisture, based solely on the structure of your strand. Let’s put it another way, think of your hair strand like a strainer. What makes a strainer work well is how many holes it has to release moisture when added to it, the less holes the less moisture will flow through. If your hair strand is highly porous it means that it does not hold water well, slightly the same as a well made strainer.
If your hair is considered low porosity it means that it holds moisture very well once it is allowed to pass into the strand, not what you want in the kitchen but more ideal for your hair.
There is a middle ground, you can have what is described as normal porosity which just means that your hair can lose moisture eventually but it also can hold on to it for a while as well. Most of us prefer to be right around normal because if you your hair strand is highly porous you will find that your hair is always dry and you are constantly wondering what in heck am I doing wrong?
If you are way on the opposite end of the scale and you find that your hair has a low porosity reading then you might find that it is very difficult for your hair to receive moisture, but once its in you just might be OK.
Now that we understand all the levels of porosity we want to focus on high porosity for the remainder of this post. Highly porous hair can be very problematic because as we mentioned, that type of hair is always dry and dryness leads to breakage and affects length retention.
How do I find out my porosity?
Finding out your porosity is as easy as dropping one strand of hair into a cup of water. Yep, we promise you that it is that easy, you will need a few of your favorite hair strands, and a cup of water. Drop the strands in the cup and watch the magic happen; if your hair floats on the top then you have low porosity hair.
