What should I carry with me?
First things first, you want to be reasonable. There are some items which are reasonable to carry with you, but even so, there are things to consider aside from use or reasonableness. One thing to consider is size. Keep size in mind. You can’t go around with a full sized paddle brush* and wide toothed detangling comb in your purse.
Instead, take travel sized items. A comb, brush, pack of bobby pins*, some rubber bands or hair ties*, a bottle of gel, a bottle of hair spray, a bottle of wrapping foam and some edge control are enough to get you through anything this side of being stranded on a desert island for a month.
What shouldnt I carry with me?
Hair spray that is contained in an aerosol can with a lid is safe. A bottle of water with an ill-fitted top, to rewet your hair, is not safe.
Think in terms of quick fixes, not full-on start to finish hairstyles. Gel is enough to redirect an out of place curl or a disobedient ponytail. You don’t have to detangle, rewrap, shampoo and condition your hair in the sink of the bathroom. Keep it simple.
What do I carry these items in?
The trick to being able to lug all of this around with you is packing. Imagine the way you pack for a big trip. Think shapes, space saving, and placement. If you could shrink a small carryon piece of luggage down to fit into your purse, you would have the perfect container for the hair items you need to carry with you.
Find small containers that are square shaped. The dollar store is a great place to look. You can fit more items with different shaped into a square container than you can into a circular container. Aim for something that is about three to four inches deep. This will depend on how big or small your handbag is, but this is a good starting reference.
Make sure your container has a snug and secure closure*. You don’t want spills and you don’t want things to fall out if the container gets tossed around in your bag while you drive or move around while wearing your purse.
Finally, get a container that is opaque. It’s more discrete and it’s really nobody’s business what you keep in your stash.
