Just like any other topic knowing your audience is very important before you decide to discuss it. I am from a family of four girls, two of us are natural and the other two have relaxed hair.
We talk about everything in our WhatsApp group and we very close friends and sisters, with the exception of natural hair.
We share a lot of photos ranging from our latest fashion purchase, home décor, and many other things. However, when we shared our natural hair photos I noticed that this killed the conversation.
Two of my sisters literally said they hate natural hair and whenever we sent photos they didn’t know what to say.
However, I always comment on how beautiful their hair looks because you do not stop being sisters because of the choices you make about your hair.
This got me thinking since natural hair might still be a sore topic for some people, there is some importance to the notion that there is a time and place for everything.
For example:
Avoiding negative comments with polite dismissal
I remember my little sis told me to have my hair done the next time I visit them otherwise I embarrass them with my natural hair. The reason being according to them how I look is a reflection on them.
I responded politely saying my hair is always done nicely it’s just that’s it’s not the way you like it. However, I let her know in a nice way that I could care less about what her friends thought about my hair.
Respecting other people’s choices and expecting them to respect yours
Usually, when one makes a discovery it’s only natural to be excited about sharing it with other people. I was like that too when I went natural, I meant well but I noticed that people didn’t like it and so now I only offer advice if I am asked.
I also respect other peoples’ choices for instance with my two relaxed sisters I do sincerely compliment their hair if it’s looking great. After all, how we choose to wear our hair shouldn’t affect our relationships whether with family or friends so why make it a sore issue.

How can u be ashamed of what GROWS from your scalp? It’s unbelievable 2 me that in 2016 black women are still struggling with this even with their own family members! smdh
