I had my last relaxer in December of 2013. At this point in time I had yet decided to official “go natural” but only wanted to go towards protective styling. I ultimately made the final decision in February 2014 when I took out my box braids and got a glimpse of what my hair would be like in a braid out.
Since I’ve been natural I haven’t been to a professional salon. I do my own coloring, cutting, trims the whole nine. I guess I’m honestly a bit apprehensive about going.
The real reason forms back to when I first got my first official hair cut. All throughout my life I have had relaxed shoulder length hair. It wasn’t until sophomore year of college when I decided I just needed a change that I decided to chop all my hair off.
I was obsessed with this pixie cut that this one girl had on a reality show and took the photo to my stylist. Unfortunately I left the salon with a cut COMPLETELY different then what the picture looked like and you can only imagine my disappointment.
Here I was with a style that was nothing like what I was going for and even worse I had no idea how to care for it. Long story short my hair grew out a bit and I decided to teach myself how to do my own hair including cuts.
So here I am now years later and while I tell myself that I haven’t been to a salon due to the fact that I’m saving a lot of money, the root reason is I’m scared of a disaster.
This year one of my hair goals is to get my first professional trim and straighten since going natural. I’m shooting for July and I’m so nervous of the stylist chopping off all of my hair or giving me a horrible shape making or even worse getting heat damage! However, I’ll be sure to do my research and try to bite the bullet. Wish me luck!
Have you ever had a bad experience with a stylist that has given you a fear of salons?

Too much effort , to mess it up in minutes.

I’ll never put myself in the place of a hairstylist. It’s true that if we care for our own hair we still need an ocassional visit to the beauty salon. Let’s call it a check up! Just recently on Youtube Natural Hair Guru Curly Proverb went into the salon for a light flat iron and this hairstylist was very rough on her hair and she sat there without a word. Her ends were so very bad from Curly Proverbz just dusting her ends and this hairstylist had to cut off 3 inches of her hair. Her ends were horrible!
