We’ve all heard stories or seen videos of wigs* falling off, random tracks of weave on the ground and the list goes on. I’ve always laughed until it happened to me.
I’m currently wearing my hair in jumbo twists, a protective style that I proudly completed myself. I just finished wearing box braids for 6 weeks and wasn’t quite ready to go back to wearing my natural hair, so I decided to try this simple twist style and add in the hair myself. It came out flawless if I do say so myself. I loved the looseness of the twists so I didn’t feel like I was putting too much pulling and stress on my natural hair. The only thing is the looseness brings risks.
I work in a lab and one day when I was in the vestibule (a chamber room where we put on our lab coats, gloves, and masks), I felt a tugging as I pulled my ponytail of twists to the side to properly put on my lab coat.
“Oh crap!” I said to myself as I was almost certain one of the twists came out in the back. I looked at the floor and saw nothing. I even shook out my lab coat, still nothing. At this point I was positive that one of my twists were out but where was it?! I then gently raked my fingers through my pony tail and sure enough, the culprit came falling to the ground just as one of my Caucasian co-workers was coming in. I quickly grabbed it off of the floor as she kind of just stood there in disbelief.
Embarrassingly I just told her the short version of what happened. Luckily she’s cool but it didn’t change the fact that I was still humiliated and now every time I see her I’m reminded of that lone twist lying on the floor.
Have you ever had a similar situation happen to you?
