A lot of us may want large stretched curls and even though we embrace our kinks and coils, sometimes we want to stretch our hair out a little so that we can flaunt our true length. Hair styles like wash n gos don’t do justice for tightly coiled hair, so it’s time to improvise!
What You Need:
Moisturizer/Styler
Pick
The easiest way to achieve this stretched style is by doing french braids. Start by separating your hair down the middle. You can use a comb if you’d like, but in the video Whitney follows the line where her hair naturally wants to go which eliminates frizz during the separation process later down the road.
This style is done on hair that’s already wet, because you are trying to preserve your curl pattern. After parting down the middle, create another part on one side. This makes two sections on one side.
Apply your product to each section. In the video she uses a DIY shea butter* mix, however you can use any styler that you prefer. Don’t comb through or disturb the curls as you begin the braid, otherwise that would defeat the purpose. Make one french braid and repeat that throughout your head.
You should have four french braids going straight back when you’re done. Use bobby pins* to connect the front braid to the back, you can now wear this style outside until your hair dries if you want.
Take down the braids the next day (or after your hair has dried) and you can add a little oil to your hands to make sure that your hair doesn’t get frizzy. Take down the braids and fluff out your hair.
You can also use a little of your moisturizer/styler to shape your hair in the direction you want it to go. To maintain this style overnight, simply rebraid! This style is quick and low maintenance. It’s perfect for ladies with shorter natural hair or with high shrinkage. It also can stretch out your wash n go, giving you a nicely stretched out curly fro, if thats what you are into these days.

The term “French braid” is a misappropriated term. The French have no braids, they got it from the African. So if their is no such thing as the African braid. I’m confused as to why the French have one??
Good article, just needed to point it out.
