Crotchet Braids Tutorial – Side Cornrows Left Exposed

Crotchet Braids Tutorial - Side Cornrows Left Exposed

I love crotchet braids and they are my new go to protective style. I have heard people say that you may as well sew in hair instead of doing crotchet braids because the final effect is similar. But I would counter that only if you have worn both styles would you understand that they may look similar but there is a world of difference between the two styles.

Where a sew in weave can get hot and stuffy and can even feel like you are wearing a permanent hat for those who are not used to them, crotchet braids are light and airy even when the hair itself is very full. The best benefit of crotchet braids however is the fact that you have excellent access to your scalp which is something that is not always possible with full weaves.

Personally I love them because I am free to get my hair wet as often as I like which means that my hair regimen goes on uninterrupted so I know that after the install is taken down, the health of my hair has not been compromised, and isn’t that the whole point of protective styling?

We have seen many versions of the crotchet braids but the consensus appears to be that curly hair works better with them. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen some really cute crotchet installs with straight hair but you can get away with using a great deal less hair with curly braids which of course makes for a lighter more natural feeling install.

Youtuber SweetaTHNCandy shared the below video of her crotchet braid install and I have to say that I love the fact that she left a few of the cornrows exposed on the side. It seems to be a neater way of finishing off an install without adding too much volume at the top to hide the cornrows, not to mention that the final look is hella cute!

Watch it below and let us know what you think.
