I would like to think of myself as a fairly outgoing person. I mean in a room full of people I wouldn’t be the girl who was making it a point to talk to each and every person, but if someone was standing beside me or in my vicinity, I wasn’t too shy to spark up a conversation.
However, when it came to seeing random naturals around New York City in passing, or even at work, I could never muster up the courage to ask about their hair! Sometimes, I would just be curious if their twist out was a day 2 or day 5 because it looked so flawless, or whether or not they air dried their wash n go, and if so, which products did they use.
I mean, as a natural hair blogger I’m just naturally curious about natural hair! Often times I would awkwardly stare at a natural until they caught me staring, so I would just smile and look away really fast. It wasn’t until one day I was at dinner with a new group of work friends and one of which turned out to be natural.
I then found out she wore wigs* during the work week like me and rocked her natural on the weekends. Maybe it was because I had a couple of drinks, but I just asked her a million questions!
I had been staring at her curls all night, and when I admitted that it took me that long to muster up the courage to say something, she just laughed. She then said that there’s nothing wrong with natural hair questions, and most naturals love getting them.
She said a trick is to always start with a compliment, and then you can basically ask anything. I guess that was all of the encouragement I needed because from that day forward every time a saw a natural with fab hair, I complimented her and wasn’t too afraid to ask about what products they used, or how they achieved the style.
