Tips For Taking Care Of Your Baby’s Hair

Taking care of your baby’s hair is just as important as all other aspects of taking care of your baby. Whether your baby comes into the world with very little hair or is born with what looks like a full wig, for both babies, the following tips will come in handy.

Be Gentle

Always keep in mind that your baby’s tender, soft scalp is still in the early stages of development. It is very fragile and cannot withstand the stress that comes from too much pulling and combing.

You also shouldn’t be using many of the products that you use on your own hair, as tempting as it may be. These products may contain ingredients that could cause scalp irritation or rashes. Less is always more.

Wash Day

Just like us, babies hair should be cleansed as well. When doing so, you should choose a mild and gentle baby shampoo, and only apply a small amount to your babies scalp.

If you run out of baby shampoo, don’t use any of your shampoo on their hair. Adult shampoos have higher levels of pH than baby shampoos, and can cause their hair to tangle. During the shampoo process, you can use your hand to gently smooth the shampoo over the baby’s head. Use lukewarm water to remove the shampoo. You can follow up with a mild conditioner.

This may sound odd, but just like we saw with Blue Ivy, you should resist styling your babies hair. During this early stage of their life, this is the time where their hair should be left alone as much as possible. Cute barrettes and bows may look adorable, but they could potentially be causing unnecessary stress and damage to an infant’s hair.

You may have seen or even have an infant who had infant balding. This is caused by the fact that infants spend a majority amount of time sleeping on their backs. To counter this, instead of using cotton fabrics, lay your baby on silk fabrics. The silk will not snag or pull on the hair like cotton does.

Craddle Cap

This is very common in African-American babies. It usually shows up in the first few months of life as crusty, white, or yellowish patches on the scalp. It is harmless, and will usually go away in a few months. For stubborn cases, you can apply a small amount of coconut oil and let it sit for about 30 minutes before shampooing.

No perms, weaves or super tight braids. Just wash and condition the hair and use grease like African Pride or go to the old school way and use Blue Magic, Royal Crown, Queen Bergamot, or if you wanna go waay back, Dax hair grease LOL!
