I must openly admit that am not a ‘pineappler’! I will not make it the next morning if all I do at night is put my hair in a high ponytail, cover with a satin bonnet* and head off to bed.
If you do not know what pineappleling your hair means, it is just a method used by curly girls to preserve their hair at night so they can somehow get second, third and fourth day hair without re-styling.
To pineapple you would put your hair into a high ponytail allowing your curls to freely fall forward keeping them safe from being crushed and drying out as you sleep.
I do not know if my curls are just particularly rebellious or that I sleep extra wild at night but I always wake up with stretched out curls and out of shaped hair in the morning.
This is probably the case with many of you as well, as such you might be looking for alternatives. Here are 2 additional ways you can preserve your hair at night if pineappling does not work for you.
1. Loose twists
If you are rocking a braid out or twist out for that week one option you can try are loose twists maybe 4 or five in the direction you would like your hair to fall in the morning.
If you have kinky* hair and you pineapple you might find that you will have to dampen your hair to get it from sticking straight up in the air the way it was all night long.
When you twist your hair loosely you can preserve the texture and when you unravel your hair will take the exact shape you want. With loose twists you can pin each twist on the opposite side of your head so that your hair remains stretched.
2. A Low loose bun or bantu knots
Buns are another option you can try because the ends of the hair is tucked away and it is so much easier for your hair to be shaped the way you would like it when you remove the bun in the morning.
If you want you can even install loose bantu knots all over your head, essentially creating 4 or five buns. Either way make sure your buns are loose so that you do not have any pressure on your edges and it is easier for you to sleep.
With either routine we suggest using a satin bonnet* or head tie to keep your hair preserved at night even if you have a satin pillowcase*.
What does your night time routine look like?

I have tried mini-pineapples especially if my hair was adequately moisturized. I would use ponytail holders and make 5-6 ponytails or pineapples and fluff the next day. Regular pineapple doesn’t work for me, it usually stretches/straightens my perimeter and I lose the coils/texture. Loose twists work well for me especially if I am re-moisturizing my hair.
