I am a natural hair girl that loves to try all different types of styles. I have very kinky coily hair, including my edges, so even with gel or edge control it is very difficult for me to get that smooth look that I want. So I decided to perm my edges! I know I may get some slack but I still consider myself natural and now my edges are much more manageable when doing styles that require smooth edges!

Laura Marie says
Do whatever you want with your hair. I wouldn’t but that’s me
Tianna Tettis says
I thought about putting a texturizer on my edges
Cheryl Randall says
That’s EVIL
Lewis Crystal says
Nope
Adrienne Blanford says
I put texture on my edges
Ny says
how did it work out?
Michelle Gause says
Now to me this is crazy. I am not a natural but used to be. And personally, I don’t see the point of putting any chemical in your hair if you profess to be natural. What an oxymoron. If you are a natural part of that experience is dealing with your hair whatever way it shows up and if you don’t have the curl pattern where your edges are easily tamed with an edge control you just deal with it. Interesting and not in a good way.
Andrea Hannon says
The point? The reason alot of woman have thinning and/or NO EDGES now…no chemicals or chemicals…take your pick…hell. choose!!! That makes no sense to me.
Phalonda Hayes says
That quote unquote “baby hair” look got to be put down. There’s nothing wrong with wanting nice smooth edges but stop saying you “all natural” if you putting chemicals along your edges…#yourhairdontCARE.
Meloney Camille says
I used to, I found putting all the edge control on my edges was making them more thin and hurting them more just to get a smooth look than just lightly relaxing my edges
Mary Harvey says
ME TOO. BUT I WAS TIRED OF THE CHEMICALS.
Meloney Camille says
Yes it gets annoying having to do it and remember which part you permed
Fricanna Press says
Noooo. Don’t do it. Turns into a hot mess when you lose your edges and have a thick Afro in the back. You end up looking like this —-> .
Justine Fields says
So people think you have to be all or nothing. Lol!
Meloney Camille says
I know I swear the judgement when it comes to hair in the black community is ridic
Tanya Bryant says
Chime Edwards, the natural hair vlogger, admitted to relaxing her edges during her hair journey, and she grew her hair to waist length. I wouldn’t do it, because it seems to defeat the whole purpose of “going natural”; but to each his own.
Donalee Lee Mickler says
You are either natural or not
Shanta Mitchell says
HELL NO.
Newsflash: Your edges are eventually going to fall off unless you keep on relaxing them for the rest of your earthly life. And who has time to deal with the scalp burns and bulls**t.
Who came up with this “edges need to be laid” bulls**t anyway? Do we see other ethnicities gelling their edges down like a damn fool?
Melanie Worthy says
Doesn’t make sense
LezetteBelizean HairBraiding says
No
Justine Fields says
O.k. people this may blow your mind more than this. Even your food is not really ‘all natural’! Mind blown
Chante LaShon says
No, no, no and hell no! That not natural at all!
Jillian Harrison says
It’s called grease a lil gel and a scarf
Erra Johnson says
I don’t do it, but I do like a smooth edge
Kelli Brown says
ATTENTION: YOU CAN DO WHATEVER YOU WANT TO YOUR OWN HAIR. Permed, natural, weave, wig, or braids. Unless going natural gives you the power of invisibility or that 18″ Peruvian allows you to wield your telekinesis powers, than we are ALL the same beautiful sister’s. One doesn’t make you better than the other.
Michelle Gause says
There is truth in what you say, however, there is a vast amount of natural Queens who do indeed think they are better and will belittle another Queen for doing the very things you’ve suggested in this post.
Kelli Brown says
I agree with you ????Michelle Gause. And that’s sad. We cannot continue to tear each other down, especially when we know how strong and uplifting we can be when we stick together.
Lynnette Kyle Bradley says
Exactly. . I hate when people knock women who relax their hair… Do you…. Stay Beautiful
Briana Baker says
Exactly. Just another thing that keeps us divided smh. We are all amazing no matter how we decide to rock our hair.
Shaneise Najia Sanders says
Nooooooooooooooooooooooo !
Fine Brown Frame says
Wearing ur hair natural is not a proclamation. .if u decide to relax ur edges, do you..who cares if some self righteous broad tells you that ur not “really” natural..
Alison Holmes says
NO!
Ulonda Brazzle says
I wouldn’t. Stopped getting perms 12 years ago and I’ll never look back.
Audrey Crusoe says
I perm my baby hairs edges and nape I love it makes styling easy and neat
Kim Jay says
Are y’all serious? Since when did being natural make you a better?
Like seriously I’m baffled by this conversation!
So as for the original post, if relaxing your edges doesn’t make them thinner, than I say go for it. Natural, partly natural or relaxed is all about preference, NOT entitlement!
CJ Wallace says
“Natural Hair with Permed Edges”?….what’s natural about permed edges?
Lioness Philips says
Hell no. Very stupid
Tí Joy Jones says
I stopped perms for a reason. I like my curls, edges and all
Shantel Tweet Ivey says

Penny Johnson says
I tried that many years ago and all my hair fell out. I got tired of fighting with my edges. While rinsing it wen through all and damage hair to the point I had to cut Into a mini afro. 6 years later chemical free it’s back pass my shoulders but never again.
Angel Johnson says
everyone has their own opinion about their own hair and what they would and wouldn’t do. PERSONALLY, this worked for me! but i also understand everyone is different. i don’t hype myself up and hold onto what the term “natural” really means bc at the end of the day its hair and i PERSONALLY still consider myself natural! lol. if anyone wants to know how i feel about my hair after perming my edges they can go to my channel ItsAngelDenise on YouTube and watch my update video!
i also appreciate all the comments! dialogue is good, but lets remember to be respectful bc we are all adults. much love, Ang. #BlessUp
Morgan Christine says
It’s a good thought since my edges has turned gray it’s hard to make it lay down I might try it
Karen Michele Handy says
If you wear your hair natural and want smooth edges invest in a good brush, an oil moisturizer(like ORS or Fantasia), a protein gel(EcoStyler or whatever holds “your hair”) and a headscarf. That’s all I needed, your hair is going to have a coil or curl pattern, keep it miniaturized and it’ll work with you
Lynnette Kyle Bradley says
To each it’s own. .. It’s your hair .. Do what works for you… If you relax, wear weave, wigs, Or natural… I will not belittle anyone for their preference. …. We are all beautiful. …
Michelle Hughes says
Smh…is all I will do..too much going onrelaxed edges and natural hair?? Babyhair..didnt have to read the article…think I will just stay to myself in these “groups””..Im in awe right now
Ronny Lopez says
If your edges are permed it is no longer natural
Jai Bacote says
I used to only relax my edges. I probably go back to doing that soon. I personally like smooth edges…as well as every hair exactly where I want it and put it. Just like having well groomed eyebrows that frame your face which makes all the difference, smooth edges frame my face and really pulls my whole look together. Fyi: I use the kiddie relaxer because despite what ppl claim, it is less harsh than the adult ones…tried to be grown and use the adult relaxer, my edges packed up and said “bye” they came back though.
Chante LaShon says
I don’t think being natural makes you better. I don’t think having relaxed hair makes you better. I just think your doing more damage to your edges by relaxing them. Shoot gone and relax the whole head it you go do the edges. This “baby hair” crap is over rated. You still slicking it down after relaxing it so why waist that extra money for the relaxer if you slicking it anyway. I like my natural all me. When i say natural I mean just that. I had my head shaved down and just let my hair grow back on its own. I didn’t do the transition natural. So I mean it’s just a personal choice. Do whatever makes YOU feel beautiful!
T.b. Glover says
Honestly I thought about doing this when I first went natural Shanija Russell
Tanya Weise says
That’s how I have mine right now.
Madlyne For-Christ says
No, if you’re natural. Be real and go all the way. IJS
Doris Lorraine Woods says
