Wash and go, my own hair Posted by admin on July 6th, 2010

Just a quick update, I was missing my own hair after a month of weaves etc so I unleashed it and did the classic wash and go. I simply washed and conditioned my hair and applied some eco styler gel while in the shower (no combing). Look at the comparison from my wash and go when I first went natural! It still shrinks terribly though!

Afro Kinky Curly Lace Wig Posted by admin on June 20th, 2010

I finally bit the bullet and ordered a lace wig! Yes, it’s an afro kinky curly one from a lovely Chinese vendor called Rex, got his website address from BHM. Anyway, I ordered it in 1B, 14 inches with light brown lace. To tell you the truth, I was torn between ordering the wig or the afro kinky curly hair from real hair exclusive (which I hear is also really good). In the end I figured that it would be easier to buy the wig instead. I had no intention on wearing it ‘correctly’ as a lace wig should be worn, glued onto the hairline. I always intended to sew it in either at or behind my hairline. The hair is gorgeous and an excellent match for my own hair so I was really pleased.

I decided to glue it down to begin with anyway just to see how it would look. I don’t think my application was great and it only lasted 24 hours because I got the bond wet the following day! It looked good though and I rocked it when I went shopping but I don’t think the adhesive thing is for me in the long run.

Here is wig now sewn in behind my hairline. I have left about 1/2 an inch of my perimeter out all round.

After 3 days however the wig was tangling and shedding like crazy. I was just not feeling the length of the hair so I did the obvious and chopped it! I LOOOOVE it now, its so easy to manage and co-wash. I don’t even really need too detangle it any more which  means that it is no longer shedding. My own hair is longer than the wig at the back so I just wet it and allowed it to shrink up, and who said shrinkage was a bad thing! The coloured bits at the front is my own hair, I was going to colour the wig too but I think it looks ok like this so I won’t bother.

Anyway, I really love it now, its like having my own hair out without my damaging hands causing breakage. A word to the wise, if you want to buy either kinky curly or afro kinky curly hair, be advised that it is very high maintenance, even higher than your own hair if you are a natural. I think that shorter lengths would be advisable unless you want to spend hours a day working on tangles and end up with a bald wig in a couple of weeks!

Mini update: This is the hair styled as I usually wear it.

Blending With Weave Hair Is Too Hard Posted by admin on June 8th, 2010

In this humid weather we are having, blending my hair with the straight weave has been a nightmare. After  a day and  a half my leave out hair had already reverted to a kinky straight look and when my hubby said ‘Oh I can see the difference between your hair and the weave now’ I knew I had to do something about it!

No way was I straightening my leave out daily (may as well take the scissors to my hair and save myself the trouble!) I was up late last night fixing my hair. So what did I do? I followed a you tube video on how to make a quick weave wig! Amazing what you can learn by watching a couple of videos. I did the wig exactly like she did in the video only I reinforced my glued on tracks with thread plus I sewed the wig onto my cornrows like a weave. I gave myself blunt bangs instead of the swoop bang that she did in the video.

I absolutely adore it! Now all my hair is protected and I still look fabo, and better yet, I can get my hair wet as often as I like. It was drizzling when I was out today and for the first time I wasn’t in a panic about my hair reverting!

Ok, so this is the finished product and hopefully, I can keep it like this for a couple of weeks.

On a totally different subject, I am contemplating getting myself a lace wig, possibly a curly one. I just love the idea of having all my hair protected and still look great. I had a lace wig some time last year but it didn’t work out so well. I got a straight one which firstly didn’t suit me at all and secondly I couldn’t hack the glue thing.

On the other hand, until a few weeks ago I couldn’t hack weaves and now I feel like a veteran! In any event, I could always find a way to sew in the lace front so that I don’t have to worry about glue . . . ideas ideas . . .

Straightened the weave Posted by admin on June 4th, 2010

I corrected the weave slightly. I didn’t like the idea of having so much of my hair out so I braided down the sides leaving only the sliver of hair at the top for blending purposes.

The weave hair was shedding and seemed to be breaking too so I figured that it was a bit dry so I decided to co-wash. I didn’t expect it to help but surpisingly, after the wash and blow dry with a smoothing serum, the shedding and breakage is gone! On a whim I decided to just straighten out the waves in the hair and it looked lovely!

On another topic, I already know what my next install is going to be. Its the Real Hair Online Afro kinky hair. I saw it on a lady on BHM and it matched her 4a hair to a tee. Basically it seems that with this hair, after a wash, all I have to do apply my usual styling products and that’s it! I know I know, its not likely to be that simply but a girl can dream . . . .

I will buy the hair anyway and update when I install it.

Changed things up again- a new install! Posted by admin on June 3rd, 2010

I am vey fickle it seems. Just two weeks after my indi afro, the tangles I was experiencing were driving me nuts. I’m not sure if it was the way I was looking after the hair or maybe just the quality? In any event, I cowashed it every morning and let it air dry without touching it too much but in a few hours it would be a tangled nest. Not to mention that I was losing copious amounts of the hair in my comb every time I detangled. It was then that I decided that straight weave would be easier to manage.

I installed a cheap human hair brand. I think it’s called Premium Now and is available at most stores. It’s 14 inch human hair in body wave (girl’s got to have a bit of curl!). It only took an hour and a half to sew it in.

Anyway, I left out about half an inch at the front and straightened it to blend with the weave. The blending is not that great since I am unwilling to apply the amout of heat needed to get my hair dead straight (not to mention that I don’t think even then it would match the weave exactly). Also my own hair is a brown-red colour on the ends compared to the 1B black colour of the weave. Here are the pics of the install:

In spite of everything, I can live with it as long as it doesn’t tangle and is not very high maintenance. Time will tell huh? You may ask why I’m even bothering with weaves when I can’t seem to keep them in long. The answer is simply that I am in need of a good protective style that keeps my damaging hands out of my own hair. I am every bit as fickle with my own hair and I get bored of the same style way to quickly. I just figure that if I have to be playing in hair all the time, it may as well be shop bought hair and not my own!
